Field of Dreams is 2 column, widget ready, and completely free WordPress Theme provided exclusively by Not-So Boring Life. Back in March when I started Not-So Boring Life there was a lot of buzz how great designing a custom theme is for promoting your blog. I’ve spent the last 4 months designing, tweaking and optimizing this custom theme for public release and now it’s ready for prime time. The majority of the bugs should be worked out but if you happen to find any please post a comment describing your issue.

Free Photoshop Source File!!!

If you want the photoshop source file for this theme – email me. As with anything it’s not absolutely free. I want a link back. Perhaps this is a little easier than the $5 donation I was asking for. Additionally there is another very large benefit for dropping some link love my way, but I’m not posting it here, so EMAIL ME!

  1. Any chance this is going to be ported to bbpress?

I’m a design newbie, but I really like this theme and would love to have my whole site to be based around it (wordpress blog and a bbpress board)

    • There was a surprising amount of traffic the first couple days. I’ve been trying to land an account at themes.wordpress.net (the official theme repository) but that has been more of a challenge. In a couple weeks I’m going to release a post on the benefit of releasing a custom WordPress theme.

  2. Thank you for the theme. I liked it so much I am trying it out. So far the only problem I see is when I do a search on my blog. The search page is skewed and doesn’t align correctly. You will have to visit my blog and do a search to see what I mean.

The search on this blog is fine. So I have no idea if it is a problem on my end. Only a search on another blog running this theme might tell us that.

    • Nelson,

Thanks for taking the time to try out the theme.

I’ve verified the issue with the search and have resolved it. If you download the theme again from the link above you’ll get the latest version. I didn’t roll the version number for this issue.

    • No one else has commented with this problem. I need to see the html code to see what the issue is. It looks like you put the -img- tag before the -p- that styles that text widget. Put the -p- inside the and all should be well. I have this running on my site in the top sidebar widget.

  3. Just something I noticed when I was trying your theme on my blog. And it’s not just an issue with you, but with a lot of themes and websites I’ve come across.

There was no “background-color” set in the style.css, so it defaulted to the “Desktop Color” set in Windows Display Properties. Mine, like probably quite a few others out there, is not white. So it looked funny until I added that small line into the one I downloaded.

Just thought to mention it in case you thought it worth fixing.

  4. A question I hope you can answer for me: I’ve written a few pages and am trying to sort them. I’ve changed the page order but this only seems to change the order on the right hand menu, it doesn’t change the order of the pages at the top. It just seems to be in order written.

Any idea what could be the problem there? And thanks for the PSD. Great design.

    • Whoops. Found the options page in ‘Presentation’. Hope this comment helps someone else who had trouble finding this.

  5. I spent two hours looking for a theme today, along with many, many hours looking for one in the previous weeks, and can I just tell you that I have FINALLY found the one I like??! I love this theme! I downloaded a bunch of themes from another website (which website has about 15 themes on the official WordPress download page) and every single one of them were buggy. I was excited when I downloaded those themes because I really liked them, until I uploaded them onto my blog and found out that not a single one of them worked right. Made me quite grumpy, I assure you. :-P

So then I upload your theme, and wah-lah! It works! No bugs, no weird layouts, just a beautiful theme that actually does what I wanted it to. Many, many thanks to you for your hard work. When I actually have some money (I’m in the middle of a move right now which means NO cash on hand) then I’ll be back with some money for the tip jar, I promise.

    Have a wonderful day!

  6. Quick question/comment:

I am now trying to go through and fix all of my blogs that I am importing from WP.com, and I noticed that your block quotes tend to be pretty light. To see what I mean, check out this page: http://www.votemittforpresident.com/index.php/2007/07/13/false-titles-for-articles/ If the background is a light gray and then the blockquote is a slightly darker gray, then it tends to be too light, at least IMHO. Is there anyway to edit the file so that the font color stays the same as the regular post font color? To me, the large gray bar on the left hand side, and then the fact that the whole thing is indented, makes it obvious enough that it is a blockquote, without having the text be light too.

Secondly, I am having a problem with the formatting underneath that blockquote. You’ll notice it says, “And yet when the winner-take-all policy was rolled back, somehow this was a defeat (or “rebuff”) of Mitt Romney?”

Except the closing ) is gone, and instead there is a light gray box there. I’m not quite sure why, because all that I have written in the blog is “) Is that some kind of HTML coding that I don’t know about?

Thank you for your time – I appreciate it. I don’t see a way to subscribe to the comment section on this thread, so if you could e-mail me instead, that would be absolutely wonderful.

    Many, many thanks,

    Havs

  7. I’ve just put this theme to work on http://www.nilpo.com

I’ve been getting a lot of compliments on the design. It’s a great look.

Thanks for the good job. I’ll be doing some tweaking of my own to this layout. I’ll be sure to let you know things work out.

  8. Nilpo: Glad you like the design. It has it’s quirks but overall its a pretty impressive looking theme. Hope it works out for you.

I’m pretty disappointed… I got banned from themes.wordpress.net :( No email, no explanation. Just banned! That’s pretty piss poor manners. This theme had been downloaded over 1000 times though, so maybe just maybe that’ll send enough people here to make this little venture pay off.

  9. Hi Nathan,
Like Field of Dreams, it’s fresh and clean design. I paid the $5.00 in order to have the psd file downloaded. Where do I go to do that? Do you send it? Thanks,
    Carla Alburquque

  10. Hello Nathan,
Nice theme. I used your design and changed the images to represent the company I’m working for.

    Thanks!!!

  11. Hi Nathan,
I have a new Blog and just started to organize it. I liked it very much and wanted to by a PSD file to custumize the theme. But there is one problem: when I click “categories” or “archives” it doesn’t display all posts but one, and there is no “next” or “previous” buttons after displayed post. In the category “finance and business” there are 2 posts but it shows like there is only one. What should I do?
    Thank you,
    Vadim
    http://www.plentyofluck.com

  12. bmf: I am looking into a centering option for the theme. Look for it in a few days.

Vadim: I’m also looking into the proper display of the categories. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

    • Nathan thank you!
If I buy the “Photoshop Source File” can I customise the theme by myself through “options” or whatever? (I don’t know PHP and HTML).
      Thanks!

    • Nathan one more thing,
on the “about” page in http://www.plentyofluck.com/ you can see that smile faces are moved up instead of staying on the same line, sometimes when I put “smile” it separates sentences and makes a new paragraph when I don’t want it.
      Do I do something wrong?
      Thanks,
      Vadim

P.S. I received your e-mail but I still didn’t get, will be I able to change header using the “Custom image header” in WP after I buy PSF? Or what should I do in order to change header on a picture from my PC? (no php and html knowledge)
      Appreciate your help!

    • Hi Nathan,
I payed to you 5 $, where should I get file?
      I have a few questions:

      1) Where in sidebar should I insert “Top commentators” code so it is show up before Meta on my site? Or how I can use it in widget? I insert the code in widget and it is not working properly.

      2) Where exactly on your site I can get the update to the style so that smiles will come alright.

      3) When will you correct the “categories” and “archives” page problems that I wrote about before.

      Thank you very much!

  13. Hi Nathan,

This is an excellent theme. I downloaded nearly 100 Themes and wasted many hours trying to get them to work the way I wanted. Your’s is the first them which gives the option of selecting only some pages to appear on the top Nav Bar. Brilliant design and execution.

I would have preferred a more modern typeface selection, but I look forward to doing that once I download the source file. Once again, thank you very much! Please keep up the good and selfless work! May God Bless you!

    Best regards,
    Marzban

  14. Hello, I’m back. I was wondering if you were planning on releasing an updated version of this theme that was compatible with the 2.3 version of WP.org. I recently updated my blog to version 2.3, and the categories no longer work. I tried everything I could think of, and everything suggested on the WP.org site, but none of it helped. I finally posted at WP.org, explaining what was happening, and the response was this:

“As of 2.3, the wp_categories table no longer contains the link_count or category_count fields.

You might need to find a 2.3 version of your theme.

    Here’s some compatible themes:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Themes/Theme_Compatibility/2.3

    The whole thread is here.

I really don’t want to download another theme because I love this one and it was HARD work trying to find one that I even liked, let alone loved. I’m picky when it comes to themes.

So anyway, I was just wondering if you had any plans to update your theme, or if I really do have to go looking for a new one (please, please, please don’t make me do that. Please. :!:)

Talk to you soon (I hope),

    Havs

  15. I am commenting because I really like the theme. I have experienced two problems that I need help with.

    1) My header doesn’t change. I go through the process in the change “Field of Dreams Header” and it still remains the same. Even though the edited picture is up in the admin section.

    2) I am trying to get an ajax edit comments plugin to work with this theme and it doesn’t want to.

    Can you help me?

  16. I am getting an error message as a result of upgrading to WordPress 2.3:

WordPress database error: [Table ‘jcloud_wrdp3.wp_post2cat’ doesn’t exist]
    SELECT cat_ID AS ID, MAX(post_modified) AS last_mod FROM `wp_posts` p LEFT JOIN `wp_post2cat` pc ON p.ID = pc.post_id LEFT JOIN `wp_categories` c ON pc.category_id = c.cat_ID WHERE post_status = ‘publish’ GROUP BY cat_ID

I understand this requires an update to the theme. Are you able to do this? Thanks.

Alternatively I may be able to figure out how to add this table, and wp_categories, if I know what the fields are supposed to be.

  17. Hey Nathan,

congrats. for this wonderfull theme. I have just one question… is there a way, to the content of the post in justified alignment? If i use in-build wordpress justify alignment it won’t work. The content is still floated to the left. Tnx for help. Greetz!

  18. I really like this theme and have it working under WP 2.3.2 without any issues. I have made a few adjustments to it by adding bullet items to the sidebar list, changing the padding around the smiley’s in posts. All those changes are in the CSS file, but I see there is an update so maybe those changes were already done for me. And I notice the comments look different too. I do like the idea of having the blog centered so I will definitely have to download the new rev.

Excellent work! Seems you are building quite a following with this theme. :)

  19. Hi Nathan,
I accidentally found out that this theme doesn’t work properly with IE6 and Opera where 35% of my users are using IE6!
In IE6 the sidebar drops down.
In Opera there is lack of gray colour down from the header.
What should I do to resolve this problem?
    Thanks

    • Vadim, I’ve tested this with IE6 and everything is okay. The issue I’ve seen is if a picture in the main content pane is to wide, it will force the sidebar to the bottom of the page.

  20. Hi Nathan,
you probably looked at it after I “fixed” it.
The problem is when I chenge comments.php of your theme with comments.php of Brian’s Threaded Comments plugin the pane where it says “Coments” moves to the right. You can see it here on my sitemap http://www.plentyofluck.com/sitemap/
See, the “Posts” and “Pages” tags moved to the right. If you open this sitemap with IE6 the sidebar will move to the bottom.
It does the same with different plugins.
How can I fix this issue at least with Brian’s Threaded Comments and sitemap plugins ?

    Thank you very much,
    Vadim

      • Nathan,
I am not quite sure what you are talking about. I downloaded this theme from your site again and it showed the same problem. But on your blog it is ok – the “Coments” heading is centered and you probably use the same Brian’s Threaded Comments plugin, isn’t it?
Please help me, what exactly I should change?
        Thanks,
        Vadim

    • I can’t tell you exactly how to fix this because this is an issue with the sitemap plugin. Its labeling the ‘h2’ with the ‘ddsg-wrapper’ which is causing the shift issue. If you change that ddsg-wrapper to ‘post’ it should work.

The other option is to format the headings using the ddsg-wrapper class in your css file. Honestly thats a much better option and will look better on the site. Then as you add plugins you can add css code to format appropriately.

  21. Hi Nathan,
    Thank you for your help!
I just wanted you to pay attention that if I test your site or this theme in here:
    http://www.anybrowser.com/siteviewer.html
It gives all appearance of the site altered, that means that there are some bogs and some browsers open your site not correctly.
If you check your site’s HTML validation here:
    http://www.anybrowser.com/validateit.html
it gives you all errors that are in there.
I have the same problems on my site, there are some browsers that have trouble opening my site!
May be you should review your theme and update it as well.
    Thanks again for your support!
    Vadim

  22. Someone else put your theme onto my blog for me (he has now disappeared, of course). The blog is in a subdirectory of the domain. It looked great (I do love the theme!), but the HOME button took visitors to my site home page, not back to the main blog posts page. I complained, and the fellow installed a redirect on the domain so that anyone clicking on any link to my homepage would be directed to the main blog post. That turned one problem into another. Now, anyone who clicks on a home button on the site gets directed to the blog. How can I correct this so the site links go to the site, and the blog link goes to the main blog posts?

  23. Hey Nathan!

Cool theme. Was just wondering if it’s compatible with the new 2.5 version of WordPress. I’m still at 2.02 but plan on upgrading fairly soon and would hate to spend time on a theme that breaks when I upgrade. Thanks a ton!

    • Brian,

I actually hadn’t tested the theme with the new release of WordPress 2.5. However, I just uploaded on my test site and everything seems to be working properly, so you’re good to go with your upgrade. Thanks for the comment ;)

  24. How can you change the background color? Didn’t see a jpg for it in the images folder. Thanks! Great looking theme!

    • If you’re looking to change the background color external to the body you’ll need to add the following line to the css file in the body section:

      background: #73a0c5;

      Does that answer your question?

      • Well, I’m looking to change the color (white) where the main body has a gradient from grey to white the far background color. Can there be a different color than white? how does it get the gradient? It seems like most of the templates i’ve seen so far all have like jpg files that make up the design outside the body. I am fairly new to this. I did add that code in the style.css file and didn’t see any difference. Even tried changing it to FF0000 to see if I get a red something. Sorry very new to the whole wordpress idea. Trying to figure it out. But very excited about it. Thanks for your help so far!

  25. Hi, I want to say that this is the most gorgeous theme after searching for about a week that I could find! I currently am setting it up to switch to worpress. The url I left above is temporary until I export.

I am having serious issues getting plugins to take on the plugin panel. They are in the correct directory, but will not show for me to be able to activate.

I know it’s a long shot, but would it have to do with the theme? WP newbie here, and go nuts. :)

If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear about it. The plugins I’m trying to use are events calendar, all in one seo, dofollow, social bookmarks, etc. Seem to be compatible with 2.5

    Steph

  26. Kwestion.

Im using FOD at my site with WP 2.6, and when I insert an image in the post with the built in image put-it-in thingy, and give the image a caption, and choose and alignment, the image is not aligned. In the editor it is, but not when displayed on the page – it acts like there is no alignment tag at all.

Any ideas what could cause this? Thanks for any and all help!

    Davin

  27. I probably need to take the time to make this theme 2.6 compliant. WP release a couple new standards for themes and one of those happens to be image alignment.

  28. I’ve installed wordpress 2.6 on a Go Daddy hosted site. I installed Field of Dreams. When I go to select the theme in the wordpress app, the preview is blank. When I click the theme, the preview is all text.
I searched for an answer and read that it could be the theme folder’s permission setting, so I set all permissions to “read” (using a mac). Still no luck.
    Here is the path:
    http://www.berkeleychildplace.com/bcp/wp-content/themes/FieldOfDreams
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Imari

    • I’ve not tested this theme with 2.6 just yet.

However, when I hit your url I don’t have permission to access the site. You’ve got a major permission issue. Once you get that resolved let me know if you have any problems. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

      – Nathan

  29. hello nathan!
Firstly,i must congratulation u because of this great theme. Im really glad to have found it!

this is the code i have for that:

    my blog is this

    million thanks in advance

    • Jack,

This theme has been ported by somebody to the google blogspot platform. I don’t know that I can really help you with your problem.

However I did do a search for ‘blogspot theme email posts’ and found a couple snippets of code you could try to see if they do what you want.

Good luck and glad you like the theme.

      – Nathan

  30. hello nathan! thx a lot for the last answer! :) it helped me!

ive just found another problem with the tenmplate, the images host of the images from the Field of Dreams Template has put advertisements instead of the images of the template from this images-host saying “bandwith exceeded”.
    Result,this awful new template: :(:(:(:(:(
    http://sonriendoalmundo.blogspot.com/

i understand why they appear.I was looking for the images of the template to host them on another images-hoster and fix the problem but i didnt find them, they are only here:

    http://s537.photobucket.com/albums/ff337/communist-template/fieldofdreams/

and obviously, they are replaced by the new Image so i cant get them with the good size… :S:S:S

I can wait for the host to put the bandwidth limit okey but it may take 1 month maximun :S

    http://photobucket.com/faq?catID=56&catSelected=f&topicID=518

well, million thanks in advanced for your attention!

    Antonio with a big problem

  31. How do i enable that the author of each post is included? I share my blog with She Who Rules in my home. and sometimes it’s nice to see who wrote what.

  32. Hi i am currently using your theme for my blog layout. But i discover that when i do a bulletin for my post, the bulletin wording font seems to be bigger then my normal font. Can you help me to solve this?

  33. There is little bit missing with your image templates, you can see in this line:

    textarea{

    background:#fff url(img/shadow_top.gif) repeat-x top;

    }

    “img/shadow_top.gif” not included

Maybe you can attach this image in future zip file download.

Anyway, I really love this template, thanx very much, keep the good work
