Dumpster Diving Equipment is Cheap
You really don’t need anything to get started. Here are a few items to make life a little easier. 
One of the more popular dumpster diving books on Amazon is The Art & Science of Dumpster Diving by John Hoffman. He outlines a good process for hunting furniture, food, or other treasures. If you’re looking for a good book before you jump headlong into your first dumpster, consider this one. The only other piece of equipment you really need is a good flashlight. Actually, a head lamp is much more functional, so you have 2 hands to get through as much dumpster treasure as fast as possible. 
For $8 a good headlamp with batteries is tough to beat. In the end, you really don’t need anything to get started. Shoes are a good idea. Gloves are optional but also a good idea.
